Fashion Photography: How To Get The Job

Fashion photography places the emphasis of the photograph on the clothing or other fashion items instead of on the model. The photographer uses the model to make the clothes look their best, not the other way around. Fashion photography is used in advertisements and in fashion magazines.

How to Become a Fashion Photographer

The most important item that any photographer must have is their portfolio. This will showcase their best fashion photography, as well as other works. Many photographers use websites to create online portfolios of their images. They find that the ability to edit pictures by computer helps keep down costs. Most industry professionals will still want to see a hard copy before they hire you though.

Tear sheets of published works are most beneficial, but good quality 8 x 10" prints are also suitable. Some photographers who specialize in fashion photography may also choose to use 4 x 5" transparencies.

Most of the images should pertain to the type of job you are trying to get. Product shots, for example, if you are trying to get an advertising shoot. Be sure to include one or two other examples to show your range.

The next step is to research your market. Know the magazine you are submitting to, and most importantly find out the photo editors name and submit your work directly to them. Label sample you send with your name and telephone number. Do not send originals, have working prints or transparencies made, and include a self-addressed stamped envelope if you want your materials returned.

Fashion photography is a competitive field and you may want to find a photo agent to promote your work. Photo Agencies can also re-sell your work to other markets, giving you more time to concentrate on your craft. You may choose to work with models or props or both.

There are many avenues for a fashion photographer to break into the business including: freelance, working for a retailer, working for a publication such as a magazine, working for a fashion house or manufacturer, or working for an advertising company.

With time and effort your fashion photography could rate right up there with noted fashion photographers such as Phillipe Halsman, Helmut Newton and Herb Ritts. Your work could be featured in Vogue, Elle, or Glamour, or you could branch out and sell your work as art photography.
