In Mold Decorating - What is it?

In mold decorating may be an unfamiliar process to many people. Plastic molds are basically a shape that is formed by plastic. Generally these shapes are made on a machine that produces many of the same molds. These molds can be of just about anything and used for many things. Many of the products we use on a daily basis are created from plastic molds. For example, your cell phone case or your remote control cases are likely made from plastic molds.

In Mold Decorating Basics

In mold decorating is a process that can be used in conjunction with plastic mold making. Most plastic products created from molds or otherwise made need to have a surface finish applied before use. The surface finish can act as a decorative or protective layer, or to smooth out and cover up surface defects, or even to alter surface properties in such a way that is helpful to the finished product. Other surfaces can be added to the plastic; for example an adhesive surface can be added if necessary to the product.

During the process that takes place to create a plastic product from a mold, in mold decorating can be applied. This process will most likely require additional equipment that can be very expensive. The design of the in mold decorating should also be appropriate and cost-effective to counter the cost of the equipment.

The designs that can be used in this process can generally be varied, which allows for the personalization of designs. Labels can also be applied with in mold decorating; this can eliminate the need for the application of labels after the process. This can create a much more professional appearance and keep labels on items that if removed, would be detrimental to the manufacturer or owner.

There are advantages and disadvantages to in mold decorating. The most obvious disadvantage would be the cost. This process can be very expensive. Another potential disadvantage is the inability to change the design after the product is produced. In addition to the equipment being expensive, the design (or designs) itself can be expensive. However, paying for a good, expensive design may be preferable to paying a moderate amount for an inappropriate or unprofessional design.

There are multiple advantages to in mold decorating as well. This type of designing can create a more professional image, give the manufacturer the ability to personalize plastic products somewhat, and create labels that are permanent.
