Modern Development of Golf Clubs for Youth

It is only recently that mass market manufacturing of youth sized golf clubs has become the norm. For most of us, our children learned the wonderful game of golf by using our set of clubs. They learned to compensate, as they honed their swings, for the inappropriate length of the clubs. Perhaps our youth even obtained a sense of how to adjust to different circumstances as they grew, and had to continuously modify their swings.

Of course some youth golf clubs were cutoffs. As with most forms of cutoffs, youth golf clubs that are cut to size are typically hand me downs that have already been used. Nevertheless, cut down clubs are easier for the youngest of our children to learn with, but they do promote some problems in general swing mechanics. A youth sized golf club that has a cut-off shaft does not have a club head that is weighted in proportion to the length of the shaft. Hence, although the club heads weight makes them most likely easy to swing and promotes significant swing speed, once the youth progresses to full size clubs their swing mechanics may be a little off.

Today our youth can walk into discount department stores and find several brands of impeccably manufactured golf clubs for youth. Although the discount stores may only carry one or maybe two brands of youth sized golf clubs, the specialty golf store has taken the provision of such clubs a level further.

Big Business and Our Youth

Although most folks are in favor of teaching our children the wonderful game of golf, it is true that this has provided major opportunities for golf associated manufacturers. Golf clubs for youth are now a major component of the product portfolios for most club makers. Most youth golf clubs can also be custom fit like the full sized variety. As the youth line up their shortened driver for a major run at the normal sized ball, the club fitter can adjust the lie angle to make sure that our young golf fanatic maximizes the opportunity to hit their first 250 yard drive. Youth golf clubs have really come of age.

The Youth Golf Club

Some may consider the youth sized golf club as a specialty club, it is not. It is simply made proportionally smaller both in the length of the shaft and weight and size of the club head. This allows the young person to groove a swing that is appropriate for their size, and as they mature, they can gradually migrate to longer and heavier clubs that are more appropriate for their musculature and bone structure.

Modern day golf club manufacturers may have taken some of the magic out of the process where your child grew up learning the game literally in your golf shoes. However, it is hard to dispute that it has given them the opportunity to be a better golfer than their mom or dad.
