Can Purified Drinking Water be bad For Your Health?

Purified drinking water is water that is free of dissolved minerals. Because of this, it is able to absorb and dispel toxic substances in the body, compared to tap water which may contain chemicals (such as chlorine), dioxins, fluoride and parasites. This has made purified drinking water a popular choice among the population, especially those that are health conscience. However, despite this, it is possible that purified drinking water may cause health problems if drank over long periods of time. Studies since have shown that if fasting, drinking purified water be dangerous due to the rapid loss of electrolytes (such as sodium and potassium) as well as trace minerals in the body. Many commercial beverages, such as cola and soft drinks, are made from purified drinking water. Studies have shown that people who consume large amounts of soft drinks expel high amounts of nutrients, such as magnesium, calcium and other minerals out in their urine. This is because of the purified water in the drinks, which due to its mineral-free content, absorbs the minerals out of the body. This can result in diseases later in life, such as osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, hypothyroidism and many others associated with premature aging. There are no studies showing that drinking purified water from time to time is harmful, however over long periods of time it has shown to cause various health concerns. On the flip side, drinking tap water has also shown to be harmful if consumed over long periods of time, due to the addition of chlorine which results in the formation of by-products when exposed to decaying vegetation in the water. Drinking water that is hard (meaning high in minerals) or ionized water is thought to be best for drinking over long periods of time, as studies have indicated that it could increase health longitivity in humans. The best rule of thumb is to take everything in moderation, and if in doubt, don't.
