Perfume Making: Customize the Fragrance

For the majority of women, it can sometimes be difficult to find the perfect scent in stores. This problem can now be solved by creating a customized scent at a specialized store. There, a professional will help you with your selection and assist in the creation and making of your ideal perfume.

There are three categories in perfume fragrances and these are top notes, heart notes and base notes. Perfumes are normally made using a combination of notes and it can take a lot of time to decide on the best combination for you. Making perfume involves experimenting with various notes and deciding on the concentration of each that is needed.

The notes evaporate at different stages causing a variation of smells as time passes. The top notes evaporate first and are usually the strongest scent at first. The middle notes stay longer and produce a more lasting scent than the top note. The base note is the scent that stays on the skin the longest; this is normally the subtlest scent and the way that the different notes work means that perfume can give a lasting scent that varies constantly. In the process of designing and making a customized perfume, it is important that the combinations of notes work well together and that one scent does not overpower the others.

Making Perfume at Home

Making perfume at home can be as simple as using a combination of essential oils to form a pleasing scent. A simple process is to mix about 30 drops of essential oils starting with base notes, moving on to middle notes and finishing off with top notes. There can be just one variety of note or many depending on your taste. The essential oils should then be added to some bridge oil, then a couple of drops of alcohol. After mixing well, it should be left for days or weeks, the longer it is left, the stronger the scent will be so it is entirely down to preference. Add a few drops of water to the mixture when it is ready then filter it and store it in a bottle. However, note that finding the perfect scent can take a fair amount of experimentation.

Base notes can be vanilla or sandalwood, middle notes can be ylang-ylang or clove, top notes include lavender and bergamot and the bridge oil can be a few drops of oil such as lavender or vanilla in order to join the notes together. If you are interested in reproducing the scents you create then take care that you make a note of the exact ingredients and that the proportions have been measured out exactly. Natural oils often create better scents than synthetic oils although some of them have negative effects so it can be necessary to research the oils thoroughly before using them. Making different perfumes will most likely improve your knowledge of good combinations and increase your chances of making the perfect perfume.
