Is Dog Obedience Training Equipment Necessary?

Whether you have a new puppy or an older dog and you want to train it to be obedient, do you really need dog obedience training equipment? Why can't you just use a newspaper, some treats and a stern word? Isn't that all you need to train your dog to be a good dog? It really depends on the age of your dog and the goals you have. If your dog is a puppy, you're likely to have an easier time training it than if it's an older dog. That's not to say that it's impossible to train an older dog; but the old adage is true: it's hard to teach an old dog new tricks. Therefore, if your dog is older, you probably do need dog obedience training equipment. Your goals will also dictate whether or not you need dog obedience training equipment. What do you want your dog to do? Or not to do?

The Dog's Age

How old is your dog? Has your dog ever been trained before? Was that training successful? If your dog is a puppy, you may just need a choke collar, a leash, some treats and a lot of patience. However, those things (collar, leash, treats, etc.) could all be considered dog obedience training equipment. If your dog is a little older, and training has never really worked, you may want to consider getting more dog obedience training equipment such as blinders to help them focus, a whistle or clicker to reinforce your commands, treats (those are always good for any training regimen), as well as a squirt bottle or a newspaper. Remember never to hit your dog for any reason. A loud noise is all that's required to alert your dog that it's not doing the right thing.

Your Goals

What do you want your dog to do? If you just want it to sit, lay down, come or any of the other basic commands, the above dog obedience training equipment pieces will suffice. However, if you want your dog to be a hunting dog, for example, you may want to consider more specialized pieces of equipment such as hunting dog training equipment. A hunting dog needs to be trained to go after the kill, to either point at the kill or to bring it back. And if the dog is trained to bring it back, it should be trained to bring it back unscathed, that is to hold it in their mouth without putting puncture marks in it.

There is no right or wrong way to train your dog, but it's always a good idea to get a few pieces of dog obedience training equipment if you're really serious about training your dog.
