Best HDTV Still Requires Quality Digital Input

Even the best HDTV monitor will not give the best picture if the incoming signal is not in digital format. Many consumers are disappointed after buying what they believe to be the best HDTV set on the market, only to get it home and see no real difference in the picture. While most cable and satellite services use digital programming, the receiver has to be able to interpret the signal to take advantage of the enhanced resolution.

Most digital and cable providers provide a set-top box that allows the viewing of digital programs, even without a high definition television. Once the best HDTV is connected there should be a significant improvement of the program viewing. However, in searching out the best HDTV set on the market, it pays to do some research to determine what it is you are looking at. Not all wide-screen televisions are high definition and not all high definition sets are integrated with a tuner that will be needed if planning to pull signals from the air for free.

There are essentially three types of high definition sets and how you view them will help determine which is the best HDTV for each individual.

Choices Include Interlaced And Progressive

One of the most popular technologies for high definition television is the 1080i, which means the signal coming into the set appears on the screen one line at a time with 1080 lines being used. Interlaced is the technology, similar to the older CRT screens with which the lines are sent to the screen, every other one at a time. For example, imagine the lines being numbered one through 1080. The best HDTV with 1080i resolution will make the first pass putting out the odd numbered lines first. While they are still visible on the screen, the even numbered lines will be sent, interlacing with the ones already displayed.

With progressive scanning, such as with the best HDTV equipped with 1080p, the lines are sent to the screen in order, one through 1080. If a still photo is taken of an interlaced picture on the television, there will appear white spots where the image has not yet been sent to the screen. With progressive scan screens, the picture will have no empty spaces.

The size of the television, the digital input availability in the home as well as the digital sound capabilities of most digital receivers will help you determine the best HDTV products needed to fit your specific needs.
